In the treatment of respiratory diseases such as Asthma and COPD, inhaling medication into the lungs can be a very effective drug delivery route.
Unfortunately, it frequently isn't. Research has documented that many patients do not use their inhalers properly, resulting in less drug reaching the lungs, and more drug being wasted (either remaining in the inhaler device, or deposited in the mouth and throat).
Clement Clarke has used its knowledge of accurately measuring airflow to develop simple handheld meters for use in inhaler assessment and training. The In-Check Inhaler Assessment Kit and the In-Check Dial accurately simulate what it is like to use commonly-prescribed inhalers, whilst measuring the speed of inhalation.
Achieving the optimum inspiratory flow for an inhaler can significantly increase the amount of drug deposited in the lungs (leading to increased clinical effect), and reduced risk of side-effects.
In-Check DIAL is a simple tool to help health professionals learn and teach good inhaler technique it provides an objective measure of speed of inhalation, removing the need for health professionals to guess how fast patients are breathing in.
