Introduction to In-Check Oral

In-Check Oral meter

In-Check Oral is a portable hand-held inspiratory flow meter that provides objective assessment of the speed of inhalation.

Inhaling through the mouth when using an In-Check Oral will cause air to be drawn through the meter - a cursor moves along the scale to indicate the speed of inhalation. The flow rate achieved can be noted by checking the position of the cursor against the calibrated scale.

Its original design has been modified for use in hayfever (In-Check Nasal), through the addition of a mask that covers the nose and mouth.

By placing a specific resistance between the meter and the patient, it is possible to measure the speed of inhalation as if a specific inhaler were being used. This principle has been applied to two inhaler training and assessment products(In-Check DIAL and In-Check Inhaler Assessment Kit).

In-Check Oral is now being used to document the changes in lung function associated with the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of several respiratory diseases, including COPD.

In-Check Oral COPD research

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is now recognised as a significant burden for health care systems across the world. The disease places a large demand on limited resources, and those affected have a reduced quality of life, and a reduced life expectancy.

Pulmonary function analysis such as spirometry cannot always document changes in lung function within these patients, but new research suggests that simple measurements of inspiratory capacity may reveal more about how effective different treatments can be. In-Check Oral is one of the instruments presently undergoing trials for its ability to spot changes in lung function.
